How You Can Find Comfort in Jesus in "I'll Stand by You" Lyrics by the Pretenders

Oh, why you look so sadall

Tears are in your eyes

Come on and come to me now

Don't be ashamed to cry

Let me see you through

cause I've seen the dark side too

When the night falls on you

You don't know what to do

Nothing you confess

Could make me love you less.

Oh, why you look so sad?

Tears are in your eyes

As a man that suffers from Bipolar Disorder (manic depressive disorder) I have my blue days and often find my eyes filling up with tears. Sometimes the load can get so heavy and I really need the anointing and peace of the Holy Spirit just to cope. So often when I get sad I withdraw from all people and often I withdraw from Jesus also.

Come on and come to me now

Don't be ashamed to cry

Let me see you through

cause I've seen the dark side too

The days will s stretch on in my depression and sometimes I will make it to church and by the second chorus I am crying and I am not ashamed. What is so good about Jesus was that He was said by Isaiah to be a man of sorrows and He has seen a dark side too.

I weep at church right through the prase and worship service and peace comes and floods my soul and heart. Jesus sees me through.

Do you feel resonance in this song?

Does Jesus see you though when you are down?

Do you cry to Jesus?

We have to be able to come to Him more then just one day a week at church. I often do it in my bed at night when I chat to Jesus and yet when I get really depressed even my daily chats are called off.

So many people don't assume that God suffers and Jesus cries and yet with this world we see, surely watching all of what is going on they are in tears. And if they are in tears they have seen my sort of tears and He promises to be here for me.

When the night falls on you

You don't know what to do

Nothing you confess

Could make me love you less.

So often depression comes like a night. We also come and fall into a night of sorts when we fall into sin and the time between when we sin and confess that sin is a dark time. But Jesus sings here so easily that nothing that we can confess will make Him love us less.

One day I saw a vision of Jesus as He appeared after He was whipped at the cross. He turned around so that His back faced me. His back was in shreds similar to the strips that you cut in meat before you dice it. They are the stripes that were cut in his back so that we might be healed and forgiven.

So often it's our sin that keeps us away from Jesus and His waiting arms and we need to cast of the worry and come with our tears and confess our sins so our tears can be wiped away.

I'll stand by you

Ill stand by you

Won't let nobody hurt you

I'll stand by you

Jesus is unreal. He is always there for me with a comforting word if I chat to Him and if I read the Word he can always pick me up with His promises. Often when I am going about my business this song will come on the radio and it's Jesus singing to me letting me know that He is standing with me by my side.

There is real joy in knowing that the Creator of the world is standing in your corner, sure some people hurt us, but Jesus sorts that out for us and we grow from the experience.

So if you're mad, get mad

Don't hold it all inside

Come on and talk to me now

Hey, what you got to hide?

So many people are mad at God and they just don't know it. They don't know that they can swear at God and shake their fists and get mad and rant and rave. King David was an expressive sort of guy that wrote his prayers and he did his share of ranting. God encourages you here, get mad, don't hold it all inside. Remember Jesus died for all your sin even if you get mad at Him.

The number one thing satan wants is for you to think that God is not fair in some way and to harbour resentment toward him. So get mad and then when you're finished ranting have a good talk to Jesus and tell him everything on your mind.

Get out of these stuffy prayers, these oh so holy prayers, and simply have a chat to Jesus and unburden yourself. I do this often. In fact I chat more then what you would consider praying.

If your mad at a situation or at God or Jesus do you think God doesn't know? Don't suffer in silence, you'll be surprised how good you feel when you get it off your chest.

I get angry too

Well I'm a lot like you.

We were created in the image of God but somehow we seem to take human emotions and discount them from God and say that He doesn't go through what we go through. You only have to look at Noah's flood if you believe that it happened, to see what happens when God gets angry. If Moses had not interceded with God on more then one occasion God would have wiped out the Jews in the wilderness and they were His chosen people.

Don't hold in your anger. Vent it with God. God wants you to know He is a lot like us. Jesus is a man and God at the same time, with human emotions and that's what makes it so cool that He is our high priest praying and interceding for us in heaven. Let God know you are angry. Get it off your chest and you may find a fresh breeze blowing after you do, a refreshing breeze like a beer after a hard days work.

When you're standing at the crossroads

And don't know which path to choose

Let me come along

cause even if you're wrong

In the Christian life we have a life full of decisions and things to do. So many people come to major crossroads and they get nervous. Jesus asks us to simply take Him along. So few people pray and fast these days. God is still a God that helps His people make decisions and He wants to be consulted. As I speak to Jesus most days I find that most of what I am doing from day to day and article to article for instance comes from Jesus direction. But Jesus promises even if we make the wrong decisions that He will be with us.

I'll stand by you

I'll stand by you

Won't let nobody hurt you

I'll stand by you

It's so grand that even our worst decisions Jesus is still there to help us and take us further in our journey. Scripture declares it.

Romans 8:28 28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

God promises that He will make good of everything as long as we are walking with Him; both the good and the bad. I find this one of the most comforting passages in the Bible.

Take me in, into your darkest hour

And Ill never desert you

Ill stand by you

So often we leave Jesus out of our dark moments and we go ahead in our own strength. People don't often run to Jesus until all their own efforts have run out and been exhausted and yet Jesus wants us to approach our dark moments with Him, hand in hand. He promises that He will never desert us.

This is such a comforting thought. That Jesus will never desert us and will be with us through the darkest hours and actually wants to walk those dark corridors with us. This is exciting and comforting to a weary soul.

And when...

When the night falls on you, baby

You're feeling all alone

You won't be on your own

Sometimes Jesus feels so distant yet His word is never distant. When times are tough we need to stand on the promises of God in the Bible. The night can get pretty dark. As a person that suffers from depression in my Bipolar disorder I know what it is like to be in a dark position and yet Jesus infuses me with joy each time I approach Him and speak to Him.

Once again if satan doesn't keep us mad at God, he wants us not to speak to Jesus and the Father in prayer. That's why you find time for everything else but don't find time for prayer. Prayer and reading the Bible are two things no matter how much time you have to spare you'll find yourself most often neglecting.

I'll stand by you

I'll stand by you

Wont let nobody hurt you

I'll stand by you Take me in, into your darkest hour And I'll never desert you I'll stand by you I'll stand by you Won't let nobody hurt you I'll stand by you Won't let nobody hurt you I'll stand by you

Take some time and vent to God. Take your heart and search your heart and tell God your deepest hurts and your desires and get angry if you must. Then have a heart to heart chat with God. And remember Jesus will stand by you.

Then go and look up this song and play it online and let the tears roll.

With all my love Matthew Payne
